Common Clinical Symptoms
Allergic Rhinitis
An inflammation of the mucous membrane of nose. Common symptoms include bout of sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose and itchy nose.
Asthma
An inflammation of the lower airways presenting with difficulty to breathe. Key symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and tightness of chest.
Atopic Dermatitis
Sometimes called 'the itch that rashes.' A red, inflamed rash most often seen on the arms, legs, ankles or neck.
Urticaria
An allergic reaction to injections or certain food where the skin forms irritative reddish patches called hives or nettle rashes.
Sinusitis
Inflammation of the sinuses due to viral, bacterial or allergic triggers. Symptoms: pain in forehead/face, cough, and thick nasal discharge.
Conjunctivitis
Inflammation of white of the eyes and inner eyelid. Manifests as redness, tearing, stinging and watery discharge.
Otitis Media
Middle ear disease due to inflammation of eustachian tubes. Earliest signs are usually ear fullness and pain.
Food Allergy
Reaction to egg white, milk, peanuts, shrimps, wheat, etc. Manifests as throat itching, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and hives.
Occupational Allergy
Caused by workplace exposure affecting lungs, nose, eyes and skin. Certain metals and latex are common triggers.
Anaphylaxis
Life-threatening emergency: airway obstruction, breathing difficulty, wheeze, sudden blood pressure fall. Can be fatal.
How to Detect Allergy
1. Consult Your Doctor
The doctor takes a detailed history, looking for clues in your lifestyle (work, home, diet, pets, family history) to pinpoint the cause. After a period of medication, the doctor may advise an ALLERGY TEST if necessary.
2. Allergy Tests
Intradermal Skin Test
0.02 ml of test allergens is introduced intradermally on the forearm. Induration 3mm more than control is positive. Up to 25-40 tests performed.
Prick Test
A drop of glycerinated allergen extract is placed on the forearm and pricked. Positive reaction is a wheal & flare. Up to 70 tests performed.
Blood Tests
Measures allergen specific IgE antibodies in serum (RAST/ELISA). Graded class 0-6.
